We love being outside and we love coaching in the outdoors but unfortunately, at present we’re not able to do either. Maybe together we can do something to keep our coaching muscles in good shape, as well as our bodies and minds at this difficult time.

The outdoor and sporting community has, as expected, responded amazingly to the current lockdown situation bought about by the covid-19 crisis. There has been a wealth of quality resources, information, entertainment, reading recommendations, podcasts, blogs and vlogs for people to engage with.

We also have a wealth of experience in the form of outdoor coaches that unfortunately have a reasonable amount of time on their hands due to the crisis.

The Idea…

The amount of resources I’ve found to be excellent, but if I’m honest a little overwhelming in terms of what I can meaningfully engage with. So, the idea would be we pick one of these resources or a coaching concept/question as a theme, we have a week to read, listen, watch and start to form some ideas around the concepts and how we can use the information to inform our practice when we get back to normality. We then meet virtually via zoom and share our experiences and thoughts to help further refine our thinking around that concept.

The intention is very much one of a sharing of experiences as a community of outdoor professionals – we’ll act in a facilitator role to provide an online platform and some structure but we’re definitely not here to give you “the answer”.

We’ll provide a theme for the first couple of weeks but if this proves useful, it would be great to get some recommendations from the wider outdoor community going forward.

Who’s this for?…

I think to get the most benefit from this opportunity you’ll need to be an active outdoor coach who probably (but not necessary) holds a formal coaching qualification from an awarding body such as British Canoeing, British Cycling, Mountain Training etc.

How will it work?…

We’ve all, I’m sure had a variety of experiences with on-line platforms some good and some not so good – what we can’t have is everyone trying to contribute at the same time as the technology can’t cope. So, our initial thoughts would be something along the lines of the following:

  • ahead of the zoom meeting you’d email (we’ll contact you once you’ve registered) over a brief outline of your situation i.e. voluntary or professional coach, working with recreational or performance athletes and an overview of your thoughts on the topic.
  • We can then use this information to pick a range of contributors from across the group from a variety of different backgrounds and perspectives.
  • These contributors would then put across their thoughts, ideas and experiences to the rest of the group – followed by an opportunity for the group to ask some questions, before moving on to another contributor.

Of course, you can simply come along and be part of the discussion, there is no requirement to formally contribute…although it would great if a few people did.

We’ll also put together some suggested resources around the topic and a brief Vlog about the weeks topic to provoke some thoughts around the topic.

How do I get involved?…

Just book your place below, we only need your name and email so we can send you the link for the ZOOM meeting. We are going to keep the numbers small initially as we iron out the inevitable technological wrinkles.

We hope you’ll join us for this event, we know it’s not the same as the real thing – but we love coaching and think it would be cool to hang out for an hour or so and discuss our passion with other likeminded individuals.

Stay safe!
