Sea Kayak Surf and Rough Water Coaching Courses – 1 and 2 Days

Does the thought of taking your sea kayak into the surf make you feel a little unsure? You know how this story ends, you catch a wave, end up sideways, end upside down and then you’re swimming for the beach. So, you tend to avoid the surf for this reason…which is a real shame as surfing waves is one of the best things you can do in a sea kayak!

If the above scenario sounds familiar then this course could be just what you’re looking for! We look at all aspects of the surf environment.  This course is all about empowering you as a paddler and developing your personal skills, it isn’t about taking you into conditions that stretch you so far, you’re unable to learn and develop. We won’t spend the whole time in the surf as this would be exhausting, but we will use other environments such as flat water, rock gardens, tide races and wind generated swell – we’ll utilise the transferable skills that these different environments provide us with, making you a far more rounded and confident paddler in all surf and rough water environments not just beach breaks.

The course will be delivered by Darren, a British Canoeing performance sea kayak coach and endorsed Guide who want’s nothing more than to make you a more confident paddler and see you thrive rather than survive in the surf. The ratios for this course are deliberately kept low to allow for an individualised performance coaching approach that puts you as the paddler, at the centre of the coaching process.

Potential areas for development we’ll explore over the weekend could include:

  • Control, style and efficiency in the surf
  • Boat set up
  • Safety and etiquette
  • What makes a good wave for sea kayak surfing
  • Developing your roll in dynamic environments
  • Changing your boats hull shape and speed in dynamic environments
  • Driving the boat to improve efficiency

Where will your course take place?

Your course will take place on the amazing Exmoor and North Devon coast with arguably some of the best surf breaks in the country with a variety of friendly and progressive waves to chose from, welcoming tide races as well as a host of rock hopping venues – all within easy reach of each other.  We can also help you with a range of accommodation options if you’re traveling down to us, from camping to B&B’s.

Who’s this course for?

Anyone looking to develop their personal performance in waves and enjoy 2 days of great coaching in a fantastic location! To get the most from this course you will by no means need to be a super athlete, but you’ll require a modest fitness level and have a fairly consistent flat-water roll. You will probably own your own boat and looking to take it into more exciting environments. As mentioned above all sessions are progressive and designed to develop you as an individual and the level of challenge will be set by yourself.

Not quite ready for this course? Why not check out our sea kayak coaching weekend.

Or Just come for one day in the surf and do your own thing the following day with your new found skills! See dates above.
